If you’re setting up your Google Business Profile and you don’t have a website yet, you might be wondering if you can use your LinkedIn profile instead. I hear this question a lot from small business owners and solo service providers who are just getting started.
The short answer is yes. You can link to your LinkedIn profile as your “website” on Google. But the better question is whether you should.
As a Boston digital marketing consultant, I help clients think strategically about how they show up online. Here’s what I would share with someone who wanted to set their LinkedIn profile as their url on Google:
Yes, Google Will Let You Add LinkedIn as Your Website
Google gives you a space to enter your website URL, and it doesn’t restrict that to traditional websites. So if you enter your LinkedIn profile link, it will appear in your Google Business listing.
This can be a decent placeholder if you’re just getting started and don’t have anything else. But that’s really all it is… a placeholder.
Here’s Why I Don’t Recommend It Long Term
LinkedIn is a great networking platform, but it’s not a substitute for a real website. When someone finds your business through Google, they expect to land on a page that gives them a clear sense of what you do, who you help, and how to get in touch.
When you link to LinkedIn instead of a proper site, a few things can happen:
- You lose control of how your business is presented
- You can’t customize your message or guide the visitor to take action
- You miss out on SEO opportunities because LinkedIn doesn’t have the same level of support for data analysis that a website could give you
- You won’t be able to track how many people clicked, where they came from, or whether they reached out
I’ve worked with clients who saw a real difference in credibility and conversions once they switched from LinkedIn to even a simple one-page site.
Websites Can Be Surprisingly Affordable
If you’re holding off on building a website because it feels overwhelming or expensive, I get it. That’s exactly why I offer affordable SEO-ready websites designed for service providers and small businesses who aren’t ready to pour cash into an Apple-level website.
You don’t need something fancy. You just need a clean page that clearly explains what you do, includes your location or service area, and makes it easy for someone to contact you. That one simple change can help you rank higher in search, build trust faster, and turn profile views into real leads.
If you’ve got a couple hundred dollars and some time, I can get you up and running with a serviceable website. Then, when the dollars start coming in, we can look at comprehensive SEO packages and a fresher design but I am big believer in focusing on your product and lead generation early in a company’s scaling process. You know your finances best, but I would encourage you to look into website setup because it might be more doable than you think.
If You’re Not Ready for a Full Website, You Still Have Options
I always meet clients where they’re at. If a full website isn’t the right next step for you right now, here’s what I recommend:
- Use Google’s free one-page website that comes with your Business Profile
- Set up a temporary landing page using a tool like Carrd or Squarespace
- Work with me to build a custom one-pager that reflects your brand and supports your SEO goals
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. What matters is that your link builds credibility, not confusion.
LinkedIn Is Useful… But It’s Not Your Website
If you’re using LinkedIn as your main link right now, that’s okay. It’s a common first step. But if you’re serious about growing your business and getting found in local search, it’s worth creating something that works harder for you.
I help business owners like you build a professional presence online that doesn’t just look good, it helps you get found by the right people at the right time, and that translates into real revenue for your fledgling company.
