Whether you are brand new or ready to refine your moves, Boston’s Latin dance scene has something for everyone. From energetic salsa nights to smooth bachata classes, you’ll find group lessons, private instruction, and social events happening across the city every week.

Popular Latin Dances You Can Learn in Boston

Latin dance is a broad category of partner-based styles with deep roots in Caribbean and Latin American cultures. Here are the most popular styles taught in Boston dance studios:

Salsa
Fast-paced and full of flavor, salsa is a staple in the Boston dance scene. Expect upbeat music, turns, and lots of movement. Most studios teach either New York-style salsa (on2) or LA-style (on1).

Bachata
This romantic dance from the Dominican Republic has exploded in popularity. It is slower and more grounded than salsa, with a friendly vibe that is perfect for beginners. Bachata is one of the easier dances to pick up, and if you attend a beginner class at a place like Havana Club in Cambridge or Bachata Room at Dante’s down the street, you can be ready to social dance in no time. Bachata is by far my favorite type of social dance simply because it is so accessible and easy to experiment with once you have learned the basics. Plus, the bachata scene in Cambridge is especially vibrant.

Merengue
Simple, energetic, and fun, merengue is often taught as a warm-up or beginner-friendly style. You will catch it at many Latin dance socials throughout Boston.

Kizomba and Zouk
These styles are often included in Latin nights even though they come from African and Caribbean influences. You will find kizomba classes in select studios like Salsa y Control or during special workshops.

Top Studios for Latin Dance Classes in Boston

1. Havana Club (Cambridge)
This is a legendary spot for Latin dance in Boston and is always my go-to (not sponsored, I just love the place). When you join the dance community and start talking to people who are in the know about Boston dance, Havana will inevitably come up in most conversations. It is a staple of the community and a great place to start from scratch or jump in with deeper dance knowledge. Friday and Saturday nights feature salsa and bachata socials with an optional beginner lesson included but Havana is open most nights. Check Havana’s website for exact times… they keep it very up to date. They are cash only but added an atm recently so don’t stress if you don’t have dough in-hand.

2. The Dance Complex (Cambridge)
Home to a rotating schedule of Latin and world dance classes including salsa, bachata, and fusion styles. Also hosts occasional Latin dance socials.

3. Bachata Room

Bachata room hosts bachata dances (shocker, I know) and lessons in Cambridge. The spot is smaller but really cozy and is in the back of a bar if you want some grub after your dance.

4. Dante’s (Cambridge)

Dante’s hosts bachata dances regularly and is right down the street from Havana so you can try one or both and see which one suits your mood for the night. Dante’s hosts themed bachata nights fairly frequently which are always a blast!

5. Salsa y Control (Allston)
One of Boston’s most well-known Latin dance schools, offering salsa and bachata classes every day of the week. Great for beginners and experienced dancers alike.

What to Expect From Your First Latin Dance Class

Most classes in Boston follow a similar structure:

  • Warm-up and basic steps
  • Partner drills (no partner required, you rotate)
  • Short combinations or turn patterns
  • Practice with music
  • Friendly community vibes

Classes typically run 60 to 90 minutes. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes with smooth soles. Avoid sneakers with rubber grips that can restrict movement if possible but, if we’re being totally honest, you’ll be fine with sneakers. At the end of the day, wear what makes you comfortable and have fun!

Why Boston is a Great City to Learn Latin Dance

  • Year-round dance socials across Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville
  • Strong Latinx cultural presence and events celebrating Hispanic heritage
  • Diverse instructors and dance communities welcoming all skill levels
  • Easy access via the T, especially around Harvard Ave, Central Square, and downtown

Whether you are in Back Bay, Allston, or Somerville, there is a Latin dance class near you.

Final Tips for Getting Started

  • Do not be nervous. Most people come alone, and everyone was a beginner once! As a more seasoned dancer, I love dancing with beginners because it helps me focus on basic technique and see whether I really know something well enough to walk someone else through it.
  • Commit to a few weeks of class to build muscle memory and confidence
  • Attend social dances. They are the fastest way to improve even if they may seem intimidating at first. You will get the most out of this experience if you jump in head-first and don’t look back!
  • Follow local studios on Instagram to stay updated on pop-up classes and workshops
