Why Don’t I See My Google Ads When I Search?

Running a Google Ads campaign but not seeing your ads? You’re not alone. Many advertisers worry that if they can’t find their own ads in search results, something must be wrong. But before you panic, know this—just because you don’t see your ad doesn’t mean it’s not running.

As a digital marketing consultant in Massachusetts, I help businesses optimize their paid search campaigns and troubleshoot visibility issues. In this post, I’ll explain why your Google Ads might not be appearing, how to check if they’re running, and what to do to improve visibility.

There are several reasons why you may not see your ads when searching for them. Understanding how Google Ads works will help you avoid wasting time, budget, and ad performance by searching for your ads manually.

This may not be a bad thing because you want to target your campaign so that it only shows to the users who are actually seeking your services and likely to convert. If you removed all targeting, your budget would be blown out of the water! Sometimes, though, it can make sense to pare back your targeting details.

Google Ads allows advertisers to set specific targeting parameters, including:
Location targeting – Ads may only show in designated areas. If your campaign targets users in Boston, but you’re searching from Rhode Island, your ad won’t appear in your results.
Device targeting – If your ads are set to display only on mobile but you’re searching on a desktop, they won’t show.
Audience targeting – If you’ve set up custom audiences, your ad will only appear to users who fit that profile.

Fix: Check your campaign settings in Google Ads to confirm your targeting aligns with your search conditions.

Google Ads uses an auction system to determine which ads show for each search. Your ad won’t always win a top spot—especially if your budget is too low.

Limited Budget? If your daily budget is low, Google may pace ad delivery throughout the day, meaning it may not appear every time.
Bid Strategy: If competitors outbid you, their ads will show over yours.

If you repeatedly search for your ad but never click it, Google may stop showing it to you. Why? Because Google optimizes search results for relevance—and if it thinks you’re uninterested in clicking, it will remove the ad from your view.

Fix: Use the Google Ads Preview & Diagnosis Tool instead of searching on Google.

Google Ads campaigns can be set to run only during specific days and hours. If you’re searching outside of that timeframe, your ad won’t show.

Fix: Check your ad scheduling settings in Google Ads to confirm when your ads are set to appear.

Google uses Ad Rank and Quality Score to determine which ads get shown and in what position.

Factors that can affect Ad Rank:

  • Ad Relevance: Is your ad copy closely related to the search?
  • Landing Page Experience: Does your website provide a good user experience?
  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): If your ad isn’t getting enough engagement, it may not show often.

Fix: Improve your ad relevance, landing page quality, and CTR to boost Ad Rank.

Instead of searching for your ad manually, here’s how to check its status properly:

  • Found in Google Ads Dashboard → “Tools & Settings” → “Ad Preview & Diagnosis”
  • Shows how your ad appears for different locations, devices, and audiences without affecting impressions
  • Navigate to Google Ads → Campaign Reports
  • If your ads have impressions and clicks, they’re running—even if you don’t see them yourself
  • A low budget or competitive keywords could be limiting how often your ad appears
  • You may want to consider restrucuring your campaign or increasing bids for potential higher placement in search results
  • If your ads violate Google’s policies, they may be disapproved
  • Go to Google Ads → Policy Manager to check

1. Increase Your Budget or Adjust Your Bids

  • Higher bids = Higher placement & more visibility
  • If your budget is too low, your ad may stop showing early in the day

2. Optimize Your Content with targeted CRO

  • Write more relevant ad copy
  • Improve landing page speed and experience
  • Increase click-through rate (CTR) with compelling calls-to-action

3. Expand Your Targeting Options

  • Consider adding more locations, devices, and ad schedules
  • Adjust audience settings for broader reach

4. Test & Refine Your Ads

  • A/B test different headlines and descriptions
  • Experiment with responsive search ads for better performance

Not seeing your Google Ads doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t running, although it could indicate that you’re not reaching your target audience depending on your settings.

Instead of searching manually, use the Ad Preview Tool, check impressions, and review campaign settings to confirm ad performance.

If your ads aren’t converting and your campaign is set up optimally, you may want to re-evaluate your marketing strategy or vendors. While some campaigns do need time to stabilize, it is important to know that you are moving in the right direction. Ask your paid ads consultant why they are setting up the campaign in the way that they are and see if you agree with the psychology behind the campaigns. Open dialogue can truly transform a campaign when you are working with a skilled strategist.
